insensate, cogitate

I'm feeling particularly insensate to emotion tonight. Which is actually a good thing because I've been feeling kind of down this past week. Mayhap work is finally taking it's toll on me.

I've been swamped at work lately but on things unrelated to the pancreas projects. It's been two weeks since my rotation started in the mouse room. One of the animal techs had a baby recently and so it was decided that the research techs in the lab will do shifts to help out. I actually miss doing this type of work, but after today's 5 hour marathon hauling cages and harrassing mice I'm just too glad to be done with it by tomorrow.

I spent Tuesday and Wednesday extracting DNA from close to 350 tails for the entire lab, also as part of aiding the animal techs. I got a look at our freezer today and saw at least 20 bags of tails, corresponding to 20 litters, that await extraction. I don't really have to be the one to do it, but I fear that if I don't we will be in a backlogged state all through the summer. Plus, a lot of those tails belong to me anyway.

I am also severly behind in my genotyping. I have about 100 samples to process with 3 or 4 PCR reactions per sample. My boss and I are now cogitating on ways to inveigle the summer students to do the bulk of the work.

This week is also my turn to do daily Hot Room (hot in terms of radioactivity, not temperature) surveys and cleanup. It's a loathesome, thankless task because people just aren't as careful or mindful of their spills. Of course, no one will admit to causing a spill. And with 50 people with access to the room it is virtually impossible to find out who did exactly what, despite the fact that everyone is required to sign in and out everytime.

I look forward to tomorrow's Indigo Girls at the Boston Fleet Pavillion concert. Hopefully that will cheer me up.
