school and job applications

To answer Mel's inquiry: I don't really know what I'm going to do with my blog as I've run out of gimmicks. Perhaps I should actually start blogging for real :)

Anyway, foremost in my mind nowadays are my applications for grad school. I promised myself to submit all my applications by friday this week, but I don't know how realistic that will be. My personal statement, while in better shape than it has ever been, is still incomplete. I still need to write something school-specific: why do I think the school/program is good for me, and which professors/projects I am most interested in. It also awaits expert editing/reviewing by several people, including roommates, colleagues and my boss. My boss did an amazing job with Vidya's essay - considering he only allotted 30 minutes to it and he had countless other things on his mind. I'm thinking I'll give him my essay last. I also don't want to bug him too much because he also needs to do my letters of recommendation for schools and jobs too.

Speaking of jobs, my job prospects in Canada are still looking bleak. I've only had two replies so far. The first was from Univ of British Columbia. Unfortunately, the PI is not able to hire anyone without a Canadian work permit. How does one get a work permit? Well, one has to first have job offer from an employer. See the chicken and egg paradox?

The 2nd reply comes from a PI in the University of Saskatechewan who will be moving to Lakehead University in Ontario. Seemed promising, but I haven't heard from him in more than a week. He asked for 3 letters of recommendations. He even asked me a technical questions about genotyping knockout mice. I hope I was able to answer his question satisfactorily.
